In 1953, Chevrolet went into production with a dream... the first American sports car. It featured a stylish, low-profile body made of lightweight fiberglass. The first Corvette was powered by a modified, six-cylinder engine with triple side draft carburetors and Power-glide two-speed transmission. With duel exhaust, the free-breathing six pumped out 150 hp. at 4500 rpm. All 53's were finished in Polo White with red interiors and black tops. The 1954 model looked the same with some added color choices. But 1955 brought the arrival of the all new 265 cubic inch V-8. It packed 195 hp. and pushed the Vette 0-60 mph in just 8.5 seconds. This was the beginning of an enviable reputation that still exists today for Corvette owners.
