Introduced by Ford in April, 1964, the new Mustang was an instant success with over 22,000 orders taken the first day and 263,434 sales by year's end. The Mustang was available with a variety of engines, including the popular 289 V-8, and could be loaded with all the latest power options. On April 17, 1965, the Mustang celebrated its first birthday by setting a new world record of over 418,000 sales in its first year on the market for a new model. The Mustang offered economy, sportiness, and performance in the lower price range - a working man's sports car. And thus began America's love affair with the famous Pony cars, which are sought after today by many car collectors.
