Case, like many tractor manufacturers of this time period, was trying to develop a light weight, easy-to-maneuver tractor, which could serve the needs of the small family farms across America. The first crossmotor concept was introduced in 1915 as a three-wheel design. In 1916, Case began manufacturing a series of tractors which featured a four-wheel design and unique cross-mounted, 4-cylinder engine. In 1919, Case brought out the 15-27 which was rated as a 3 or 4 plow bottom tractor. It could produce 27hp. on the belt pulley for running large equipment like the threshing machine. These durable tractors soon became the mainstay of the Case line and replaced the steam engine by the mid 1920s.
