In the fall of 1957, Allis-Chalmers introduced the all new Model D17 featuring more power, a better ride, and functional new styling. The most important new feature, however, was the Power-Director hand clutch with high and low ranges. Combined with a four-speed constant-mesh transmission, the Power-Director provided eight forward speeds plus high-low on-the-go shifting. The versatile Model D17 was offered in dual-front, single-front, Roll-Shift front axle, high-clearance and orchard models. The Roll-Shift adjustable front axle could be adjusted without using a jack. If the tractor had power steering, engine power was used to move the front wheels in and out. The Model D17 was a very important tractor in the Allis-Chalmers line. Several improvements and updates were made between 1957 and 1967 to keep pace with the rapidly growing needs of the American farming industry.
