The Farmall Model M was introduced in 1939 and soon became the most popular tractor in IH history. The Model M was upgraded to the Super M in 1952. It featured a 263.9 ci four-cylinder engine which offered a 22 percent increase in power for the gasoline version and 32 percent increase for the diesel. The Super M could easily handle a three-bottom plow and the bigger implements used on larger acreage farms. In 1954, IH introduced the exclusive Torque Amplifier and created the Super M-TA. The "TA" provided an on-demand power downshift which gave the Super M-TA ten forward and two reverse speeds. The "TA" offered increased lugging power to get through the tough spots without down-shifting the main transmission. The Torque Amplifier was a Harvester innovation and a first in the farm industry.
