The Model 70 was introduced in 1953 to replace the durable John Deere Model G. Available originally in gasoline or LP-gas models, it later was offered in a diesel option. The Model 70 thus became the first John Deere diesel row-crop tractor. The 70 Diesel soon set a new fuel economy record, bettering all previously tested row-crop tractors. In 1954, the John Deere 50, 60, and 70 models became the first row-crop tractors equipped with optional factory-installed power steering. This industry first, was achieved with a system that used built-in hydraulics to control the steering column. The Model 70 also featured an independent clutch-controlled PTO which improved equipment handling and performance.
