John Deere began production of the Model M in 1947. It was intended to meet the growing power needs for smaller farms and to replace the L and H series. The Model MT was introduced in 1949. It featured a vertical mounted two-cylinder engine with a tricycle front-end design. The MT was available with dual or single front wheel, or adjustable front axle. The new Touch-O-Matic hydraulic control system took the heavy work out of attaching integral equipment. This advanced design gave the operator full control to raise and lower implements mounted on the left side, right side, or front. The Model MT, a fine addition to the John Deere line, was welcomed by American farmers who needed a small tractor with more horsepower and all the latest work-saving features.
