The first John Deere utility tractor, the Model 62, went into production in early 1937. Later in that same year it was modified and renamed the Model L. It featured a vertical two-cylinder engine and could pull a 12 inch one-bottom plow. This tractor was the first to introduce the idea of the offset engine and transmission to offer the operator better visibility for cultivating. The Model L was restyled by 1939 and in August of 1940 a larger version, the Model LA was added to the line. The LA offered 45% more horsepower and could handle a 16 inch one-bottom plow. A large number of implements were available for these little tractors, making them ideal for small acreage farms. The John Deere L, and LA answered the need for a small, inexpensive tractor, which could replace the team of horses on many family farms across America.
